Autumn Health Tips for Seniors

Autumn Health Tips for Seniors

Autumn is here in its full glory – a season of holidays, festivities, a lovely intro into the Christmas season BUT also the season of the flu and colds. That’s why it’s crucial, especially for our senior citizens, to know how to avoid the flu and cold so they could enjoy all the lovely things the autumn brings to us. And we’re here to help with our tips on how to prevent the flu and cold and stay healthy during fall!

1. Get a Flu Shot

First things first, get your flu shot! It’s especially easy to forget about your regular flu shot with this whole COVID19 ruckus we’ve got going on, but it’s imperative we don’t disregard the flu or other seasonal diseases going on. So, call your doctor, see if it’s safe for you to take the flu shot this year and if they advise you to do it, go for it! Schedule an appointment and write a note for yourself not to forget and show up for it. It’s that easy and it will spare you the headache and keep you safe!

2. Keep Your Diet Extra Healthy

It is always good to eat healthy in this period of life, but it’s even more important to do so during autumn when the flu is lurking. So, keep your diet and food intake extra healthy during this season. Enrich it with vegetables and fruits all the way to get those much-needed vitamins. Besides the vitamins you get naturally from food, you can also take additional vitamins and supplements to boost your immune system. Vitamin C and D are always good choices. You can also consult your doctor regarding the other supplements you can take.

3. Get Some Sunlight

There’s no better way to get vitamin D than naturally, from the sun! Spending time outside in the sunlight, how scarce it may be, is very important for everyone, not just seniors. So, when you get a good and sunny day, take advantage of it! Go outside for a walk, if you can, or simply sit on your porch and people-watch or read something. It will do you good physically and mentally, too. The more time you spend outside, the better you will feel!

4. Stay Active!

Try to stay as active as you can! It does wonders to your immune system. Take a 30-minute walk during the day, soak up on that sunshine and vitamin D, and get a little exercise! If the weather is too bad outside, you can always do some light exercises at home, too. Or, you could go dancing! It’s fun and it will give your immune system a huge boost. Just don’t forget to warm up first.

5. Get Enough Sleep and Rest

While it’s important to stay active and keep yourself busy with little things and tasks, it’s also important to take a break, rest, and get enough sleep. When you take a break and rest, your brain and your body recoup and refill with energy. So, you have even more strength and energy after them. And a good and timely sleep helps with all sorts of things including your immune system! So, make sure you have a balanced sleep schedule as it will keep you happy and healthy!
And that’s a wrap on the most important tips on staying healthy this autumn! They are simple yet effective so make sure to follow them. We really hope you will stay healthy this season so you can enjoy it to the fullest with your loved ones.
